PROJECT 03:
Designing with Architectural Principles + Materiality + Context + User: THE TROPICAL SANCTUARY
INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT
DURATION : 7 WEEKS
TASK:
For our final project in Studio II, the task at hand is to design a Weekend Retreat situated at TAMAN BOTANI NEGARA. A Weekend Retreat, in this context, is envisioned as a place where individuals seek relaxation, recreation, and vacation for a brief period of time. The key requirement for this design is to craft habitable architectural spaces that facilitate various activities such as living, dining, showering, cooking, and storage, all within a maximum built-up area of 100 sqm.
Our design for the Weekend Retreat must be in harmony with the immediate site context, taking into consideration the surroundings and existing elements. It should showcase our design intentions through the application of architectural principles, thoughtful material selection, and practical constructability. The ultimate goal is to create a memorable and captivating spatial experience for the users, ensuring that the retreat offers both comfort and an escape from the daily routine. As we undertake this project, we have the opportunity to explore innovative ideas and design solutions that will make this Weekend Retreat a truly remarkable and rejuvenating haven for those who visit it.
REFLECTION:
Through this project, I have acquired valuable skills in interpreting and analyzing the characteristics of a simple site context, as well as understanding the unique needs and preferences of the users. This knowledge has been instrumental in designing a small structure that caters to the specific requirements of the occupants while also respecting the surrounding site context.
Moreover, I have gained a deeper understanding of the design process involved in creating a simple building type. By carefully considering the user's needs and preferences, I have been able to craft a design that balances both internal architectural aspects, such as space layout and circulation, and external design elements, including aesthetics and forms.
Overall, this project has provided me with essential insights into the art of harmonizing different design values, both internal and external, to create a cohesive and functional architectural solution that fulfills the users' desires and enhances the overall aesthetics of the structure.
