Project 2b :
The Discovery Center (Visitor Center for Kampung Morten, Malacca)
INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT
DURATION : 7 WEEKS
TASK:
Students are tasked with creating a framework for their final project that facilitates users in discovering information about Kampung Morten—its people, place, activities, culture, and history. This structure will function as a Visitor Centre featuring educational exhibits, a museum-like historical or cultural journey, interactive "edutainment" programming, and spaces for interaction with locals and the natural surroundings. All gathered information will guide the creation of settings that inspire poetic architectural design.
Project 2B builds upon the foundations laid in Project 1 and Project 2A. The initial project explored the formal and lyrical aspects of architecture in a hypothetical context, while Project 2A utilized site analysis and historical research to inform the architectural design of the Discovery Center. Project 2B focuses on designing a Discovery Center (Visitor Center), with the design brief emphasizing a robust engagement and relationship with the site, people, culture, history, spatial experiences, and programmatic requirements.

REFLECTION:
The design brief for Project 2B calls for an architectural solution to create a memory repository, emphasizing a strong connection to the location, spatial experiences, and programmatic objectives. Through tutorial sessions, I've learned to craft designs by carefully studying spatial typologies, the interplay of plan sections, and environmental considerations. The structural and environment workshop provided valuable assistance in addressing fundamental issues related to building construction, materials, and the environment.
Initially, integrating the site context into my design while maintaining a smooth flow of spaces posed a challenge. However, with guidance from my tutor and additional research, I am pleased with the outcomes and believe that I have enhanced my design process.
